'Tis the season... A bright light in the winter doldrums, Dine Around
Victoria is an opportunity for restaurants to showcase themselves and
for local diners to go on a value-priced eating marathon.
While not all Dine Around menus are created equal (example: last year
Cafe Brio served three courses of mushy things) and not all restaurants
embrace the event with the same enthusiasm (example: last year Cafe
Brio, among others, limited when guests could order the special menu to
a few select and not continuous hours per evening); overall, with a
little menu scrutiny, there is great food awaiting your consumption.
Generally speaking, for conflict of interest reasons, we're not
allowed to mention the Blue Crab Restaurant on this site, but I'm making
an exception. They garnered high praise last year for their Dine Around
menu and this year looks like another winner.
Below, we've listed what we think are promising-looking menus for
this year event. What makes a Dine Around menu good? The concept is
promotional, less than money making. The objective of Dine Around is to
spotlight restaurants and get people out in slow months. In order to do
this effectively the menu needs to be creative, reflective of what the
day-to-day menu looks like and communicate value to the diner. Quality
ingredients and thoughtful preparation make all the difference.
It's easy to tell if a restaurant involved in Dine Around is in it to
try to make cash or in it to attract a year-round clientele.
